GNOME 40, the next major release of the GNOME desktop environment, brings more possibilities for automatic completion of some modules.
The GNOME team changed the release schedule after the release of the main version of GNOME 3.38. Previously, GNOME followed the major.minor version control scheme, increasing the junior version by 1 with each release.
According to the team’s joint decision, the next major release problem will be GNOME 40 with the new release plan. The pace of emancipation is also changing. The GNOME 40 Development Cycle consists of 3 iterations.
- Gnome 40.alpha
- Gnome 40.beta
- GNOME 40.RC
And the last stable edition of GNOME 40 after the candidate edition.
All subsequent bug fixes will increase the new version by 1, i.e. GNOME 40.1, GNOME 40.2, GNOME 40.3 and so on.

Features of GNOME 40
GNOME 40 – Specification
GNOME 40 is currently under intensive development and its functions are being merged. Some of them become visible as they develop.
Remember this: These functions may not be present in the final GNOME 40 version, and some of them have not yet been properly combined and tested.
Multiline symbols in the GNOME shell grid
GNOME Shell 40 displays multi-line symbol marks with full text on the mouse pointer. The application grid is a limited area where only one fixed size is available for each icon and text. If the name/label of your application is larger, it is currently registered at …….. This could change with GNOME 40. If you move the mouse pointer over these icons, the name of the entire request will be displayed.
Display floating symbols
Automatic folder filling
The Files application has not seen many improvements in previous GNOME releases. Files in GNOME 40 may automatically have file and folder names in the address bar as you type them. For example, if you type /usr/share/ic, the files will be automatically filled with icons and the possible filenames/directories will be shown in the drop-down list. Something like this:
Autofill address for the file
Extension Reboot
GNOME Extensions are an important part of the GNOME Desktop User Interface. Many important GNOME settings are only available through extensions because they are not accessible from the base GNOME.
But the extension ecosystem is not organised in terms of assembly, compatibility, testing, recommendations, etc. For this reason, many expansions are still discontinued after the release of the large GNOME release. Then the developers solve the problem. But with a well-managed ecosystem, the developer can test his extensions before marketing them so they don’t degrade.
In this context, the Reset Renewal initiative is being introduced to work on these issues. You can read about it here.
In the course of development, new functions will be introduced. Stay here for more information.
