Live captions are part of Chrome’s accessibility features. It displays an automatically detected text overlay on the screen when audio or video is played in a tab. It can be very useful, not only for people with hearing loss, but also for language learners. For now, however, the Live Caption feature only works in English and only on Windows. Google has not yet announced when it will add support for other languages. In addition to Chrome on the desktop, Live Caption is already available on some Android devices such as Pixel smartphones.
In Windows, this feature is disabled by default, and in Google Chrome, you need to manually enable the live streaming feature. After activation, you need to open a video, for example. B. on YouTube. The tooltip overlay appears automatically as soon as the browser recognizes the language.

If you are not happy with Live Caption or do not find it useful, you can disable it permanently. This can be done in the browser settings.
Disable live streaming in Chrome
- Open the main menu (Alt + F) and select Settings.
- On the Settings tab, go to the Availability section on the left.

At the time of writing, Live Caption is disabled by default in Chrome 89. It has been available in the browser since version 85, but was hidden behind a flag.
