Whether they like it or not, Google offers many services that most users are used to. Of course, if they don’t end up killing the app and preventing it from working. Which of course won’t happen with Google Discover (the new Google Now), which brings instant news about your favourite topics. Unfortunately, Google Discover is not a viable option for many Android skins (Samsung OneUI, for example). Today we’re going to show you how to add Google Discover to your home screen.
Turning on the default setting
Most OEMs do not have a Google Discover implementation, but some have made it optional since the release of Android 10. They usually offer a built-in search screen or information tabs (the Bixby screen on Samsung devices) on screen -1 (drag and drop to the right of the home screen).
Now it is likely that most people will not use screen -1 at all, but it would be very useful to allow Google Discover integration. Allows the user to choose what they want to see.
Although MIUI 12 on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices is a mixed package, it allows users to integrate Google Discover into the standard launcher, for example.
Here’s how to do it on MIUI powered devices that work with MIUI 12 :
- Crawl up against the start screen.
- Select Settings and click Advanced.
- Replace App Vault with Google Discover.
Use of external starters
The Android skins on many phones tend to carry many features of their own and avoid Google’s services as much as possible. For example, Xiaomi will offer an application safe, Samsung will offer a Bixby home screen and Huawei will offer a Huawei assistant. But that doesn’t matter if you switch to a third party pitcher.
With external launchers like Nova Launcher or Lawnchair 2, you can customize so many things, apply custom icon packs, customize gestures, and of course add Google Discover to screen -1.
We’ve mentioned these two examples, but there are dozens of launches that, with slight variations in approach, can bring Google Discover feeds if you go directly to the home screen.
We also recommend Nova Launcher because it is (always) the most functional launcher when you buy Nova Launcher Prime. However, if you want something simpler and freer, the lawnmower 2 should be a good choice.
In addition, certain functions of the launcher may not function optimally on third party launchers. An obvious example is the abuse of full-screen gestures on Android 10 and Android 11.
To enable Google feed on third party launchers, you will also need to install plugins (Nova Companion and Lawnfeed).
Here is how to activate Google Discover with the Lawnchair 2 launcher on Android :
- Download and install the Lawnchair 2 from the Play Store here.
- Open the settings.
- Select applications.
- Select all applications.
- Touch the three-point menu and select Standard applications.
- Select the home screen.
- Select Lawnchair 2 as the default startup program.
- Download Lawnfeed APK here. Allow third party services to install and implement the KPA.
- Press and hold the button on the home screen.
- Open the main settings.
- Select Plug-Ins.
- Enable the Show Google App feed option.
- Switch directly to the home screen to view Google Discover.
You’ll have to do the same for the Nova Launcher, because that requires the Nova Companion APK. If you have problems with Nova and Google Discover (Google Now) does not show up, we have something for you. Here’s an article that tries to address these issues.
Adding a Google icon or search bar to the home screen
If you don’t want to specify your launcher, you can also simply add a Google icon to your home screen and access Google Discover from there. You can also add the search widget to your home screen and access Google Discover from there.
To add the search bar widget to your Android home screen :
- Press and hold the button on the home screen.
- When the Start menu appears, select Widgets.
- Google it. Touch the widget and drag it to the start screen.
- Click on the Google icon in the dashboard to quickly access the Google feed you discovered.
Voilà! Google Discover is here. It may not be as comfortable as it should be, but it’s something.
