The first difference that stands out on the back of these smartphones is the camera module.
The Samsung phone offers a clear camera bump with recessed lenses, optics that can even prevent damage to the camera glass when the phone is held on a table. The OnePlus 9 Pro, meanwhile, sports Hasselblad’s signature extruded lenses – though two of them are recessed, like on the Galaxy.
The front of the devices shows the difference in placement of the front camera. While Samsung moved the camera to the center, OnePlus moved the front shooter to the left side of the screen.
Both devices are IP68 waterproof thanks to their glass and aluminum construction and come in a variety of colors. Samsung offers black and silver, while OnePlus offers black, silver and green.

The OnePlus 9 Pro features a 6.7-inch AMOLED QHD+ (3216 X 1440) panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz, which is becoming the norm in this price range. The Samsung S21 Ultra also has a 6.8-inch QHD + AMOLED panel, also with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
However, they differ in the support for accessories and in the capabilities of the LTPO panel used. OnePlus’ hardware allows for screen updates from 1 Hz to 120 Hz, while Samsung scales from 10 Hz to 120 Hz.
Apart from this difference, while Samsung is supposed to offer a maximum brightness of 1500 nits, OnePlus achieves the advertised 1300. Both panels are HDR10+ certified.
The S21 Ultra supports the S Pen, which is sold separately.

As we’ve written before, photos taken with a smartphone depend on the post-processing they undergo. This year, OnePlus announced a three-year partnership with Hasselblad that it says has improved color science.
To support this innovation, the OnePlus 9 Pro has a 48-megapixel primary sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens. According to the manufacturer, the smartphone can now record 4K files at 120 frames per second using a dedicated Sony IMX 789 primary sensor.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra features a four-camera setup with a 12MP Ultra wide-angle autofocus lens, a 108MP wide-angle lens, and two 10MP telephoto lenses, one of which offers 3x optical zoom and the other 10x optical zoom.
On the front, Samsung has a 40-megapixel camera and OnePlus a 16-megapixel camera.

As expected, this year’s smartphones feature new SoCs that offer a significant generational edge. The Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 – a Qualcomm chip available in Samsung phones, depending on the region – is present in these devices with integrated 5G modems and a 5nm manufacturing process to improve efficiency.
These chips offer a 25 and 30 percent improvement in processor performance over the previous generation Snapdragon 865 and Exynos 990, respectively.
Although both phones come with LPDDR5 RAM, the OnePlus 9 Pro has a maximum of 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The S21 Ultra comes with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage in the more expensive variant.
The devices are available in the following variants.
OnePlus 9 Pro
The OnePlus 9 Pro is available in two configurations in India and one in the US.
- 64,999 INR for 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage.
- INR 69,999 (or $1,069) for 12GB RAM + 256GB storage.
S21 Ultra
The Samsung S21 Ultra is available in the following three configurations.
- 1,199 for 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
- INR 1,05,999 or USD 1,249 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.
- 1,16,999 INR for 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage.

The displays and chips of the OnePlus 9 Pro and S21 Ultra are 4500mAh and 5000mAh cells respectively. While they both use fast charging technology, OnePlus has a distinct advantage with its 65-watt fast bar charging stand, compared to Samsung’s 25-watt bar charging stand.
For wireless charging, things remain the same: OnePlus offers 50 watts of wireless charging via the cradle, while Samsung only offers Qi with 15 watts.
Samsung has the advantage of wireless reverse charging at 4.5 W. The latest generation OnePlus 8 Pro is said to have such a feature, but there was no mention of its availability on the 9 Pro during the online event.

To choose between the two, you need to consider their software experience and battery performance.
OnePlus is known for its near-standard Android Oxygen OS interface, while Samsung’s One UI is known for its many customizations.
If you are a user who tinkers with your phone and wants to customize it to look like you, Samsung might be the device for you. Although the presence of ads in the notification shadow and other system applications is a simple process.
As mentioned, OnePlus offers much better battery charging than Samsung – and even a charger in the box. So if you are a heavy user who needs to charge throughout the day, the OnePlus might be the best option for you.
