How to fix high ping in Windows 10?

When you play just about anything online, you know that a high ping is one of the most frustrating things that can happen. It’s such a hype that the best games can be completely unpleasant.

However, there are ways to remedy this situation in addition to upgrading the equipment. In this article we look at eight possible ways to solve high ping problems in Windows 10.

You can try one of the following eight ways to set a high ping on your Windows 10 computer. If one doesn’t work for you, try the other.

Problems with the common router

There may be some common router problems behind your high ping. If you are using WiFi, try to get closer to the router to get a better signal and thus a more stable connection.

Also check the number of devices on the network. Overloaded networks often lead to higher pings. It’s also a good idea to reboot the router.

Using Ethernet

Wireless networks can cause a lot of problems while playing. For best results, it is always recommended to use a wired connection directly from the router while playing.

This not only gives you a more stable internet connection, but it also prevents things like speed decreases when you have a large number of users on your network.

Checking network utilization

Use Task Manager to track processes that consume bandwidth on your network and turn it off when you play online. This is by far the simplest and most effective way to reduce your ping.

Follow these steps to control your network usage with Windows Task Manager and potentially reduce the high ping problem affecting your computer.

Step one: Press CTRL + ALT + DEL on your keyboard to open Task Manager. You can also right-click on the taskbar and open it from there.

Step two: Then click on the Details button.

Step three: Look at the power cable. Shut down all processes that consume your bandwidth, except system applications.

Disable/restrict automatic update of Windows

Windows 10 continues to automatically download updates in the background, which can consume a lot of available bandwidth.

There are now two paths you can take:

  • Set the bandwidth limit for Windows updates
  • Configure your connection as a meter (only works if you are connected to WiFi).

Learn how to limit the bandwidth for Windows updates.

Step one: Press the Windows + I key to enter the Windows settings. Then click on Update and Security.

Step two: Click on the Delivery optimization button in the left menu.

Step three: Click on Advanced Options.

Step four: In the Download Settings area, select the percentage of the measured bandwidth. You can now determine how much of the available bandwidth Windows can use to download updates in the background and in the foreground.

Meter connection adjustment

You can also choose whether the connection should be defined as a measuring connection. When using measurement connections, Windows does not download updates and does not use the network in the background. Note, however, that this only works for WiFi networks (including personal access points).

Step one: Press the Windows + I key to enter the Windows settings. Then click on Network and Internet.

Step two: Here you can see all connected networks. Click on the Properties button under your WiFi network.

Step three: Scroll down and activate the option to connect to the meter.

When you have finished playing, you can switch to another network to download updates or simply reset the settings.

Deactivating network disturbance

Windows 10 has a built-in setting that limits the network bandwidth to what the PC can handle. On an old car, it can do more harm than good.

You can play with this setting in the registry editor to see if it helps you solve your problem.

Step one: Press the WIndows + R keys to open the Run dialog box. Type regedit and press the Enter key.

Step two: Navigate to the following registration key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARemicrosoftWindows NTC CurrentVersionMultimediaSystemProfile.

You will find a key called NetworkThrottlingIndex.

Step three: Double-click the key you want to change and change the value data field to ffffff . Then click on the OK button.

Network reset on Windows 10

If the above methods fail, you can try rebooting the network as a last resort. Here’s how.

Step one: Press the Windows + I key to enter the Windows settings. Then click on Network and Internet.

Step two: Scroll down to find the network reset setting.

Step three: Windows will give you a brief description of what happens when you restart. Click on the Reset Now button to start the process.

Upgrade your hardware/Internet plan

If one of the above seven methods makes no difference to you, you will need to make some updates. Try switching to a better router or, more importantly, choose a plan that offers better speeds and higher bandwidth. This will enhance your online ping and gaming experience.
