2024 Masters Preview
Participation in the Masters is by invitation only, meaning the tournament has the smallest field of any of the four golf majors.
Past winners, recent major champions, top finishers in last year’s majors and leading PGA Tour players are among those who will be in the line-up.
The decision by the organisers to allow LIV golfers to compete sparked plenty of debate and it is fair to say it caused loads of controversy on the PGA Tour.
McIlroy has been one of the most vocal critics of the Saudi-backed breakaway competition and will be desperate to stop any of its players winning the Masters.
The Northern Irish star has won four majors during his glittering career, but has yet to break his duck in the Masters.
A storming final round saw him power up the leaderboard last year, but his round of 64 was not enough to prevent Scottie Scheffler from winning the title.
McIlroy continued to play well after the Masters and has started this year in decent form. He will undoubtedly fancy his chances at the tournament.
However, he may find it difficult to fend off Rahm, who is in the midst of a run of results that every professional golfer dreams about.
The 2021 US Open champion recently moved to the top of the world rankings courtesy of his impressive victory at the Genesis Invitational in California.
He has won five of his last 10 tournaments and has finished no lower than tied for eighth place in the other five.
Rahm’s current form is reminiscent of Tiger Woods during his pomp and the Spaniard could be a tough nut to crack at Augusta.
His record of four top 10 finishes in six appearances at the Masters suggests that Rahm has the game to win at least one Green Jacket during his career.
Scottie Scheffler can be expected to make a bold bid to retain the title, although no player has achieved that feat since Woods went back-to-back in 2001 and 2002.
Numerous other players are potential Masters winners this year including Dustin Johnson, who swept to a record breaking success in 2020.
His 20-under-par score was the lowest in the history of the tournament and he could be a good bet to be waving his baseball cap in victory on the final Sunday.
Johnson’s controversial decision to join the LIV circuit was a big blow to the PGA Tour, but it is one that his bank manager will be extremely happy with.
The 38-year-old missed the top 10 in just one of his seven LIV tournaments in 2022 and ended the year as the leading money winner.
With leading bookmakers paying out on the first six places in the Masters, the best-priced 25/1 on offer for Johnson looks too tempting to ignore.
