Traffic and routing

As far as the exercise is concerned, both can be improved. There is no doubt that both systems will work better in some places than others, but some work is needed to compete with applications like Google Maps and Waze.

Sygic uses TomTom Go services to display traffic and other types of data on maps. Although the traffic data comes from the same company, the way you manage and display it is different. Here in Australia, the two behave almost equally well. Here is a video that covers the navigation part of both.

Different functions offered by both during navigation. Sygic offers these properties:

  1. Offers if a better route is available.
  2. Indicates there’s a parking lot nearby.
  3. Suggestions for the route overview
  4. Shows nearby attractions.

Tom-Tom, on the contrary:

  1. Displays progress bars with gas stations, security cameras, parking lots and more.
  2. Offer when the best route is available.

Interface

Sygic uses brighter colours than TomTom Go. Nearby you will find gas, restaurants and parking facilities. Both applications automatically activate dark mode, but you can activate it manually. You can also reduce the surface area. The menu on the left offers many options for configuring applications.

Voice

Sygic offers more than 75 options in English, Italian, German and other languages. Both applications download voices from the server so that they can function properly offline. The TomTom Go application has over 100 votes in more than 45 languages.

Offline Navigation

The offline function makes them both powerful. When you open both for the first time, you will need to download the maps. A small problem in both cases is that you cannot start the application without downloading the maps. After downloading the maps of South Australia, Sygic occupied 73 MB of disk space and TomTom Go downloaded 77 MB of data.

Price

Sygic has always been a paid application. You will receive a free 7-day trial period to familiarise yourself with the features, but after 7 days you must subscribe to a premium plan to continue surfing.

TomTom Go used to be a free app for 50 kilometres a month, but that’s not the case anymore. You will receive a free 30-day trial subscription and last week you were offered to subscribe to one of the subscriptions. Depending on the location, the monthly plan costs about $10 and the annual plan about $30.

Which one is yours?

Normally I start with the pricing and the free offer at the beginning. However, since they are both paid applications and both use the same services, they have slightly different functions. As far as the interface is concerned, I like the way Sygic guides the tracks, traffic lights, tram/train tracks, police, etc. The fact that you only have to pay once to activate the cards for your country makes me prefer Sygic.
